Andrey Vladimirovich Efimov
12.06.1939 - 28.02.2021
The whole life of Andrey Vladimirovich, a brilliant teacher and scientist, is an example of selfless devotion to his profession. We bid farewell to a Man, a Friend, a Master, a Scientist, a Creator. He created his world of colour and his School with many grateful pupils. Since 1996 he has been the head of the Department of Design of Architectural Environment, as the author of the scientific school "Light and Colour Environment in Architecture".
In 1962 he graduated from the MARKhI and in 1973 defended his PhD thesis on "The form-forming action of polychromy and issues of its study in architectural schools", the result of which was the "Colour and Form" course, which became an alternative to realistic painting and was recommended for adoption by many architectural colleges and faculties of the USSR. Improving the methodology of this course, he simultaneously strove to transfer the laws of colour formation into the environment of architectural and town-planning creativity. Andrey Vladimirovich headed the works on colour transformation of more than 20 districts and several cities of the country - Moscow, Yaroslavl, Surgut, Irkutsk, Yalta, Yakutsk and others. The result of his work was the publication of his monograph "Coloristic City" (1990) and his doctoral thesis "Formation of the Coloristic Environment of the City" (1992).
From 1996 to 2000 he served as Chief Artist of the city of Moscow, together with a number of other architects. Andrey together with the architects Mosproject-2 performed large-scale works – Architectural illumination of the central part of Moscow and outlying highways, and Integrated development of the Olympic Village of the First World Youth Games in 1998, for which he was twice awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation (1997; 2001). His practical knowledge of the role of colour in the formation of spatial forms of architecture, he carried over into the pages of his textbooks and monographs (Architectural Coloristics, Architectural Coloristics and Plastic Arts, Colour and Form: Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries Art).
The staff of the Department of Architectural Environment Design and his students share with his family and friends the pain of loss, grief and bitterness of this irreparable loss. Creative plans of Andrey Vladimirovich, his diligence, knowledge and talent would have given the world, art, science and professional education new discoveries.
We will always cherish the memory of Andrei Vladimirovich as a brilliant leader, colleague, friend and teacher.

Andrei Vladimirovich Efimov has passed away. It is hard to believe, as it is impossible to imagine a world without light and bright colours.
Doctor of Architecture, Professor, Honoured Art Worker of the Russian Federation, twice laureate of the Russian State Prize in Literature and Art, Honorary Member of the Academy of Arts, full member of the National Academy of Design... The list of merits and titles of Andrey Vladimirovich is endless - this man has done so much for the profession. But for the majority of his colleagues, friends, pupils and colleagues Andrew, first of all, was an outstanding expert in the field of conceptual development of colour design of the urban environment.
After graduating from MARKhI he worked as an architect, taught painting at his home institute, and since 1996 he has been the head of the Architectural Environment Design Department at MARKhI. And this was quite logical, as exactly colour was considered by Andrey Vladimirovich as a basis of objective-spatial environment, calling colourism as an aesthetic foundation of the city.
In his monograph "Colourism of the City" (1990), in one of the first chapters Yefimov investigated the history of monochrome and the origin of colour in ancient cities, accompanying the text with unique illustrations. Only he, who had the ability to perceive the world as exclusively multi-coloured, could find such photographs, where monochromy seemed to play with all colours and tints, tints and halftones of one (!) colour.
Then there were more books, textbooks, hundreds of articles, art exhibitions and large-scale projects in which the Architect and Colour always performed as a harmonious duo.
Andrey is the author of the Color Concept for the Central Part of Moscow (1998), the Concept for Architectural Illumination of the Central Part of Moscow and Outlying Highways, and the author of many sculptural monuments and ensembles in Moscow and other cities.
One could listen to him endlessly - at lectures and master classes, in discussions and friendly conversations, even on trips and business trips any conversation with Yefimov turned into a fascinating study of colour, form, their relationship in the world in general and architecture in particular.
All too often in recent years we have lost those people who seemed to have lived, created, passed on their experience, educated students, rejoiced over their successes and discoveries ... Yesterday's news weighed heavily on all of us, on the entire architectural community. But even more terrible and irrevocable was the death of Andrey Vladimirovich for his relatives. We can support them only with the fact that each of us will remember Andriy Vladimirovich Yefimov to the end of his life, a man who gave us a bright and unique world.
Eternal, bright, vivid memory.

On 1st March sad news came - dear and respected by all, Andrey Vladimirovich Efimov died (12.06.1939 - 28.02.2021).
A wonderful, kind, open and bright man, an architect, a talented artist, an outstanding master of his craft, the founder of his own method of teaching form and colour, the head of the Department of Architectural Environment Design at MARKhI, the author of many books and monographs. He had an easy, cheerful disposition, he was always joyful and interesting to be with. For more than 25 years he taught COLORISTICS at our School, and none of our many artistic events was without his participation. May the blessed memory of the Master remain in our hearts!
Let us try to take an example and live as beautiful, statuesque and fulfilling a life as he did!
